On a side note, the fact that metabolic rate and hormone levels take time to normalize post-contest is a big reason why taking a sufficient offseason is necessary because the hormone profile of someone who is stage-lean is not going to be desirable for someone looking to add muscle mass and feel more normal again.

From there, I will steadily work food up/cardio down weekly and I will slowly be adding body weight during this process because maintaining stage-lean is not healthy, sustainable, or in the best interest of long-term progress.

When using this approach it is normal to take a couple of months to feel normal again and really start getting strength back.

I am leaner than I was when I won my natural pro card in 2012 and am pushing to get even leaner prior to stepping onstage.In general, the entire contest prep experience is not miserable if you do things intelligently.In reality, the early part of my contest prep was great.At this point, my guess is that I’ve made contest prep sound like an absolutely miserable experience and have you considering if you really want to go through with that first competition.However, I want to make it clear that my entire contest prep has not been terrible and everything I discussed above is how I (and others in the published literature) feel when we get near stage-lean.
